Serena Singh is tired of everyone telling her what she should want—and she is ready to prove to her mother, her sister, and the aunties in her community that a woman does not need to be in a romantic relationship to have a happy life.
Serena’s life has a lot of positives. She is smart, confident, and just got a kick-ass new job at a top advertising firm in Washington, D.C. When her younger sister gets married in a big, traditional wedding, Serena knows she does not need a husband or children to make her own dreams come true. But with her mother constantly encouraging her to be more like her sister, Serena cannot understand why her parents refuse to recognize that she and her sister want completely different experiences out of life.
As Serena forms a closer bond with some of the married women in her social circle, her long-held beliefs about the importance of self-reliance are challenged. Her college ex reenters her life and she reexamines why they ever broke up in the first place. She is forced to confront her past in her quest to learn what she truly wants and what it means to really “have it all.”
