Story Talk Tuesday: First Person POV by Jon Braunstein

Have you always wondered why a book you read or a movie you watched has a narrator or is always told from one person's perspective, author Jon Braunstein helps us understand how and why books or movies are written from specific point of views.

Every week author Jon Braunstein features a different focus on varied aspects of what makes a good story of any size. This week was about writing or reading in the first person point of view (POV).

From the video, you learn the meaning of a first person POV, a story told from the point of view of one person who is usually the narrator or the main character. From a poll he carried out some readers pointed out that they prefer to read stories from this POV. He also points out that some genres work well with first person POV such as suspense.

Though first person POV has its strengths it is also considered a limited POV because it focuses only on the narrator, runs the risk of making the book sound like a diary, does not show the entire feelings, opinions and reactions of the other main characters and can sometimes feature unreliable first person narrator.

In the first person POV it helps the reader learn and grow along with the narrator which can create a connection and intimacy between the reader and the narrator and helps the story flow easily for the reader.
